What does "Kept for sex" mean?

When you say that an odalisque is kept for sex, what do you mean? Does the Master have to keep her financially? Is she like a trophy wife?

Ideally, an odalisque is kept from toil. She is kept for sexual service and for that alone. She has no other purpose. She is not her Master's secretary or business partner.
